Holiday Party
Fellow IMA’ers: We continue our upward climb as the attendance for November was comparable to our first two meetings but well above last year. Thank you for your support and please make the second even better by attending our dinner meetings! We are starting out the year with a visit from Congressman David Price and welcoming our peers from the Internal Auditors Association local chapter. Congressman Price has been a member of the Budget Committee for the past few years as well as a member of the Small Business Committee in years past. He is planning on discussing the final legislation that passed Congress addressing the situations with Enron and MCI Worldcom. I know it will be a very informative presentation on legislation that will affect all of us in one way or another. As many of you may remember, we in the past have had sponsors for the dinner meetings. We want to thank LoneSource for reintroducing the sponsorship role again at this dinner meeting. They have a short paragraph on their company in the newsletter and will also be at the meeting to pass out literature, make a short presentation and answer any questions you have on their company or services. If your company or if you know of a company that would like to sponsor a dinner meeting or seminar, please have them contact me. Our first foray into a seminar was a success thanks to Stuart Levine, who put on a great four hour seminar, and the great response we got from our membership on relatively short notice. By all the accounts I heard, everyone thought both the topics and the speaker were first rate. We will be building on that success the second half of the year so watch out for another Stuart Levine seminar in February, tentatively on team building. I am happy to report to you that Ted Greer, our Director of CMA\CFM Programs, has successfully arranged a new CMA review class. Our format will be a little different. Instead of doing a review of all parts over the next nine weeks, we are going to do one part, allow time for taking the test and then schedule another review part. Our first installment will be on January 25th and February 1st. It will be taught by a Professor at NC State who has done our previous sessions and will be on the NC State campus. The cost is $180 per member for both days, which translates into $11.25 per CPE hour. For non-members of IMA, the price is $250 for both days, still a fair price for CPE at $15.62 per CPE hour. We do have a minimum we need to meet, so please either contact Ted as soon as possible or check the web site out for other details. I believe that our ever efficient web-master and VP of Communications Kathy Santos-Rezendes will have the web site set up for registrations. I want to thank those of you who have responded to us by reporting your CPE. Please keep it coming by going to our website and filling in the CPE form. Right now, we are reporting only 85% of the national average of CPE hours per member. That reduces the return of your dues to your chapter and with a shrinking membership, we need to maximize the dues return from the National office. I know that with the record number of certifications in this chapter, we should be above 100%. Even if you aren’t certified or have taken more than you need for certification, please report it to us. It all counts for compensation. Please note that since we are having a joint meeting in January, the pre-registration deadline for the discount rate is the Friday before the meeting, January 10th. Also, please register early. We expect a good turnout and would like to give as much notice to the Marriott as possible if we need to move to a bigger meeting room. Does that mean you won’t be able to attend if you don’t pre-register? No. They are buffets, so the Marriott will have enough for a certain number of people who will show up at the door without pre-registrations. We would appreciate if you do know you are coming and it is Saturday - Wednesday that you go ahead and register. That way, if a significant number of people over the Marriott’s number are coming we can alert the Marriott to that fact. However, it will cost you $5 more. Let me emphasize that even though we raised the price this year, all we do is cover the cost of the meal. I have enjoyed this year as we have had great speakers, good attendance and re-introduced some services to the membership. The second half looks to be the same. That has happened because of the people who are serving on the Board. With enough people, we make the load of doing great things possible by spreading them on many shoulders. That is the difference between last year and this year. The Board is certainly fuller than last year and it shows in what we are able to accomplish for the membership. Do we need more help? YES! We still have some Directorships that are not filled, one of them being our Director of Membership Retention. We are losing membership. It may be due to the loss of jobs. It may be due to not offering value to the individual. It may be due to nobody asking for your input. Whatever the reason, we need to know so that we can address and rectify the problem. Will you help us out by volunteering? We have a Director of Roster, a Director of Speakers and a Director of Retention vacant. Come join us and develop your leadership skills. The more people we have, the less it falls on a few to keep this a viable and valuable organization. Ronald J. Lowell Chapter President Home: 821-5469 Work 998-4045 email: rlowell@nc.rr.com
