FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dear Members:

The year has gone fast and here it is, April again. I don’t know where the time has gone, but it certainly has gone fast. I have enjoyed the year as President.

We had a very good meeting in March, with the Business Editor of the Triangle Business Journal as our speaker. He was very informative to all of us, but especially to the 16 students that we had in attendance. They were so impressed, that NC State has indicated an interest in starting an IMA Student Chapter! This is a big event for us and anyone who would like to help, please give Max Shishnyak a call. He is our Student Activities Director and I am sure would welcome it. We also had students from UNC-Chapel Hill in attendance, a first for our chapter.

Well, we have the students excited about IMA, all because they attended a meeting. How about you?

We have the perfect meeting for you to attend when Bob Bell, the President of the national IMA organization and father of a local member comes to speak to us in April (the third Thursday at the RTP Marriott as usual)! We are honoring our current CMA\CFMs. Did you realize that more than a third of our chapter is certified with either the CMA or CFM? That is the highest in the country, the last time I checked.

Also look in this newsletter for information on our last meeting of the year in May when we honor our Past Presidents. We have a great speaker lined up for that meeting as well.

Well, you know that I couldn’t make it through a whole letter without getting on my soapbox. We are forming the new Board and the good news is that we probably have all the Vice-Presidents filled and a few Directors. We still need a Treasurer and some key people in membership and education. Will this be your year to get involved? There is a leadership training conference in Columbia, SC in April and one in Myrtle Beach, SC in May. It would be of great benefit if you want to get involved in the Board to attend one of these conferences. It exposes you to other people doing the same position you are doing and gives you exposure to a broad range of ideas to use here.

If you want to know what is available, just call or email me and I will send you the positions as well as position descriptions.

For those of you who may be in need of employment help, be sure and contact Chris McKittrick. He is getting inquiries.

Also, please read Barry Daly’s articles on how we can help in our community. This chapter has always had a proud tradition of community service. We need your help in continuing that tradition. It is also not too late to qualify for two prize bags or a half price dinner. See the rest of the newsletter for details.

See you at the dinner!

Ron Lowell

President

New Credential Announced – Certified Business Manager

The Association of Professionals in Business Management (APBM) have introduced a new credential – Certified Business Manager (CBM). The CBM was created to help business professionals who are specialists in their respective fields gain cross-functional knowledge to make them effective business managers and team players. The CBM takes the MBA curriculum and presents it in a certificate format. Individuals who are both a specialist and a generalist are more valuable to their organizations due to their cross-functional knowledge of business, which may be obtained from the CBM program. If an applicant already has a professional certification in a business specialty (i.e. CFM or CMA), he/she may acquire the CBM for a limited time through the Grandfather Clause. After the Grandfather Clause expires on Dec. 31, 2001, taking a two-part exam is necessary to earn the CBM. The exam includes the following ten subject areas: General Management and Organization, Operations Management, Marketing Management, Quality and Process Management, Human Resources Management, Accounting, Finance, Information Technology, Corporate Control and Governance, and International Business. For more information , visit the CBM website, www.cbmexam.com, or call Ms. Devi Vallabhaneni, President and CEO, at 323 936 6757

ICMA Board of Regents Charts a Course for the Future

At a recent meeting, the ICMA Board of Regents reaffirmed continuing support for the current format of the CMA and CFM certification programs. "These programs represent the future of management accounting and financial management and have received worldwide recognition," said Leslie Sorensen, Chair of the Board of Regents. "We intend to offer both programs for the foreseeable future and concentrate our efforts on ensuring that the CMA and CFM are highly respected as rigorous tests of competence in relevant knowledge and skills."

The Board will review the content specifications for both exams to keep the knowledge and skills required for certification on the cutting edge as topics in many areas, such as information management and financial instruments, experience rapid change. As a basis for this review, the Board will be turning to IMA’s recently updated practice analysis, "Counting More, Counting Less," and a recent study sponsored by IMA, AAA, AICPA and the Big 5 professional service firms, "Accounting Education: Charting the Course Through a Perilous Future."

Extra effort is being made to ensure that the CMA and CFM receive the recognition they deserve. IMA recently dedicated new resources to the corporate arena and to students to increase awareness of IMA and its benefits. A recent certification scholarship program attracted many new student members to IMA, and a major effort has been undertaken to increase corporate support of the CMA and CFM. Resources have been dedicated to the expansion of IMA’s international presence, where membership increased by more than 35 percent in the past year.

The Board of Regents’ affirmation of support for both certification programs was reached with considerable input from several hundred IMA constituents who responded to our surveys. The Board’s decision represents the majority view of those surveyed, and the Board would like to thank those who took the time to express their views. Your continuing support is appreciated.
