 Fellow IMA’ers:

Our students last month had a great speaker in Lea Strickland.  It wasn’t what you would call a traditional introduction to the world of Corporate Finance, but then Lea has not had what you would call a traditional career path, albeit a very successful one.  Ethics were a major part of her talk and her advice was that the students needed to be prepared for situations where their ethics would be tested.  Lea also had a very good seminar the following Saturday where she talked about sales and use tax in the morning and practical applications to procurement in the afternoon.  She has several commitments to an April seminar on cost techniques and their use in the practical application of controlling them based on people’s reaction to the dinner meeting and her all-day seminar.  Check the details below for the April seminar.

Our next CMA review is coming up in June.  It will be a two Saturday review.  See our website or elsewhere in this newsletter for details.

Your response to our request for CPE you have taken has been great!  It has resulted in a bigger portion of your dues coming into the chapter treasury so we can do things like the CMA Review, all day seminars, the dinner meetings, mailing an abbreviated newsletter to those who don’t have email and paying for a website.  Just a reminder that while your certification requirements are annual for CPE, our fiscal year runs June 1 through May 31.  We need your CPE through May in order to count it in this year.  If you could send us your hours through the end of March the first part of April, that would be a tremendous help in getting them on the April report due on 4\20.  We have a final reconciliation for purposes of the year’s pay based on CPE the end of May, so if you could tell us the 10th of May your April and May hours, that would also be a tremendous help.  There is a form on our website, but basically we need the title of the course or seminar, the date and the applicable CPE hours.  Thanks in advance for your continued help.

Our dinner speaker for April is Grant Shenk, a World Wide Think Pad Market Planner for the ThinkPad.  It is CMA\CFM night, so we will also be honoring our newly certified members over the past 12 months.  While we ask National for a list of those of you who qualify for that honor, if you aren’t contacted, please let me know.  We want you to come as our guests to honor your accomplishment.  The pre-registration deadline is the Monday before the dinner meeting on Thursday.  This pre-registration allows us to plan the room size and setup what we need for the meeting.  Cancellations need to be in by noon of the day of the dinner if we are to successfully reduce our guarantee to the hotel.

We have all Board positions filled.  We were also considering reinstating an Advertising Director due to cutbacks in our dues from National that would enable us to generate revenue to offset some of our newsletter and web expenses.  If you would have any interest in that position, please let me know.  We have also done a few Co-Directorships where people have taken on a position and will share the responsibilities.  If you are interested, that is another possibility.  It’s wonderful to see the response we have had this year for involvement.  It will make it possible to do even more next year to provide the membership with value added benefits for their membership.  The more we have involved, the less work for each person and the more we can do for the membership in keeping this a vibrant and viable organization.

Just a quick story of one of the benefits of IMA.  We had a new member come to the dinner meeting two months ago and he was unemployed.  He networked with several people that night.  Over the course of the next month, one of those people got a call from a recruiter and referred the recruiter to this new member.  He came to the meeting with a job at our last meeting he had gotten as a result of an interview with the company that the recruiter was representing.  Networking does work, and even if you aren’t in the position where you are in need of a job, wouldn’t it feel great to be able to help out one of your fellow professional peers if you get a call from a recruiter?

Thank you for all of you who helped support Bob Boone’s efforts on behalf of the March of Dimes.

Need an extra $100?  Please see the details on our membership drive presented by Ted Bachman.

 See you at dinner!

Chapter President

Membership & Marketing

Membership Competition - Win $100

Talk to your accounting friends, invite them to an IMA meeting, tell them why you are a member, get them to join the IMA, and win up to $100.  Our chapter is having a membership growth competition that ends April 30th.  The chapter members who recruit the most new members as of April 30th will win $25 (3rd place), $50 (2nd place), or $100 (1st place).

You can print an application off the IMA website or get a hard copy with a membership booklet from Bob Wage, Director of Member Acquisition (772-0115 x124) or Ted Bachman, VP Membership (217-9588).  Be sure to enter 406 as the chapter number and your name as the sponsoring member.  Then notify Bob or Ted.  We must receive the membership application with a check or credit card number on it by April 30th to be eligible for the competition prizes.  The prizes will be awarded at the May meeting.  Several new members have been sponsored, but nobody has sponsored more than one new member so you still have a good shot at winning some money.  Good luck to you and simply talk to your accounting friends about the benefits of being a member of the IMA.
